Every year thousands of students in Madhya Pradesh chase the police constable form and completely miss a quieter post that sits right next to it. The Excise Constable, or Aabkari Aarakshak, is recruited by the same board, needs the same 12th pass qualification, and pays roughly the same money. The difference is that far fewer people apply.

Be clear on this before you read further. No fresh MP Excise Constable notification has been released for 2026 as of 30 July 2026. The most recent completed cycle is the 2025 recruitment for 253 posts, whose written result came out in February 2026. Anyone telling you a 2026 excise form is live right now is guessing.

MPESB usually drops its excise notification early in the calendar year. Watch esb.mp.gov.in directly and keep an eye on our exam news feed so you don't miss the window. The form stays open for about two weeks and that's it.
What the job actually is
An Excise Constable works under the Madhya Pradesh Excise Department, not the police department. Your job revolves around liquor, country spirit, narcotics and the revenue the state earns from them.
Day to day, you'll be posted at a district excise office, a distillery, a bonded warehouse or a check post on a state border. Work includes guarding and checking stock at licensed shops and warehouses, joining raids on illegal liquor manufacturing, seizing smuggled stock moving in from neighbouring states, escorting seized material, and doing the paperwork that follows every seizure.
Honest picture: it's a field job with odd hours, night raids and a fair amount of pressure from local interests. It is not a desk posting. But the work is respected, you carry government authority, and postings stay inside Madhya Pradesh so you're never far from home. Compared to a police constable, the crowd control and law-and-order duty is much lower.

Eligibility
Education
You need to have passed 12th (10+2) from a recognised board. That's the whole requirement. No graduation, no computer certificate, no typing test.

Age is counted as on 1 January of the recruitment year. The upper limit shifts a little cycle to cycle, so confirm from the actual notification PDF.
Domicile
Reservation and fee concession are only for Madhya Pradesh domicile candidates. Candidates from other states can apply, but they're treated as unreserved and pay the full fee.

PET is qualifying, not scoring. You don't earn merit marks for running faster. But you do get thrown out for failing, so don't ignore it. Start jogging the day you fill the form, not the week before the call letter.

Steps to apply:
- Create or update your MPESB profile on the MP Online portal linked from esb.mp.gov.in. This profile registration is separate from the form and takes a day, so do it early.
- Open the Excise Constable advertisement and fill personal, educational and category details.
- Upload a recent photo and signature in the sizes given in the notification.
- Pay the fee online and save the confirmation PDF.
- Use the correction window if you spot a mistake. After it closes, nothing can be changed.
The most common form rejection in MP is a mismatch between the name on the marksheet and the name in the profile. Check that twice.

Duration is 2 hours. Questions come in Hindi and English. There is negative marking of 1/3 mark for each wrong answer, so blind guessing hurts. Scores are normalised across shifts, which is why MPESB publishes cut-offs as percentiles rather than raw marks.
Selection order: written exam, then PST, then PET, then document verification and final merit. Final merit is built on written marks alone.

- Indian polity: Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, Parliament, panchayati raj
- Geography: India and world, physical features, climate, crops, minerals
- Economy basics: budget terms, banking, inflation, government schemes
- Sports, awards, books and authors, important days
- Reasoning: analogy, odd one out, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, series, ranking, syllogism

Mental Aptitude and Intellectual Ability (30 marks)

- Seating arrangement, linear and circular
- Puzzles, calendar, clock
- Venn diagrams, statement and conclusion
- Non-verbal reasoning: mirror image, water image, paper folding, embedded figures
- Decision making and data sufficiency

Science and Simple Arithmetic (30 marks)
Science half:
- Physics: motion, force, work and energy, light, sound, electricity, magnetism
- Chemistry: matter, atoms and molecules, acids and bases, metals and non-metals, everyday chemistry
- Biology: cell, human body systems, nutrition, diseases, plants, environment
Arithmetic half:
- Number system, LCM and HCF, simplification
- Percentage, ratio and proportion, average
- Profit and loss, simple and compound interest
- Time and work, time speed distance
- Basic algebra, mensuration, data interpretation
The science is straight NCERT class 9 and 10 level. The maths is class 8 to 10 level. Nothing exotic. Work through the Quantitative Aptitude guide and then grind topic-wise practice sets until speed comes.
Salary and career growth
Excise Constable falls in the MP pay matrix with a pay scale of roughly ₹19,500 to ₹62,000, with basic pay starting near ₹19,500 to ₹20,800.

Probation is normally two years, and probationers get a fixed stipend that is lower than full pay. Plan your finances for that.
Promotion path runs Excise Constable, then Head Constable, then Assistant Sub Inspector and Sub Inspector (Excise), and with long service and departmental exams, Excise Inspector. Movement is slower than in the police, but the department is small so vacancies at the top open regularly. Add the field allowances and seizure-related duty benefits and it's a solid state job for a 12th pass qualification.

MPESB publishes excise cut-offs as category-wise percentiles, not marks, because scores are normalised across shifts.

Read that honestly. For a general category male, this is a brutal fight because 253 posts attract lakhs of forms. For ST candidates the bar is far lower. Translate the percentile roughly: general candidates were needing something close to 70 plus raw marks out of 100 to stay safe.
Books and preparation strategy
You do not need a shelf of books. You need three or four and a lot of tests.

A four-month plan that works:
Month 1. NCERT science both classes, and arithmetic basics up to percentage and ratio. One hour of reasoning daily. Start reading current affairs.
Month 2. Finish arithmetic through time-speed-distance and interest. Start MP GK from day one of this month and don't stop. Give one sectional test every second day.
Month 3. Static GK, polity and history. Non-verbal reasoning. Begin full-length free mock tests once a week and analyse each one for a full hour.
Month 4. Revision only. Two mocks a week, previous year papers, and MP current affairs of the last year. Fix your accuracy so negative marking doesn't eat you.

Common mistakes to avoid
Students skip MP-specific GK and study national current affairs only. That's backwards. The state portion is where the paper is won.
Students also attempt every question. With 1/3 negative marking, attempting 95 with 60 percent accuracy scores worse than attempting 78 with 85 percent accuracy. Learn to leave questions.
Third mistake: treating PET as an afterthought. Every cycle, candidates who cleared the written exam fail the 800 m run. It takes six weeks of jogging to fix. Start now.
