NAGOYA, October 4 — The 20th Asian Games 2026 concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony at the Nagoya Dome, marking the culmination of Asia's premier sporting carnival. The Indian contingent registered a historic fourth-place finish on the overall medal leaderboard, amassing a total tally of 85 medals comprising 21 Gold, 27 Silver, and 37 Bronze medals. Historic trap shooting gold medallist Neeru Dhanda proudly carried the Indian tricolour as the flag-bearer during the athletes' parade.
Over the fortnight of continental competition, India delivered dominant podium finishes across multiple disciplines, highlighted by championship titles in men's hockey, men's and women's kabaddi, cricket, archery, and wrestling, alongside breakthrough maiden medals in women's golf and equestrian dressage. Host nation Japan finished among the top three alongside China and South Korea. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) flag was formally passed to Doha, Qatar, host city of the 21st Asian Games in 2030.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the athletes, remarking that the historic haul reflects the transformative impact of structured grassroots identification under Khelo India and individualized high-performance nurturing through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
