Visakhapatnam Port Authority operates the major port at the north-central AP coast under the Major Port Authorities Act framework. Its official website and administrative reports document operations. The city also contains RINL steel, Hindustan Shipyard and petroleum industry, creating a strong port–industry association. These entities remain institutionally distinct; the port authority does not own every nearby factory or shipyard.
The authority's website gives a 2024–25 cargo figure and later targets. The actual figure has a year; the target is not achieved cargo. Port ranking can change as other ports grow, so this book tests the stable major-port status and location instead of a permanent rank. A port may handle imports of raw material as well as exports of finished goods. A cargo label alone does not prove the material was mined in Andhra Pradesh.
Worked example: Visakhapatnam is AP's major port authority. A question asking for the port class should not be answered from cargo tonnage alone. Nearby Gangavaram is separate even if both serve similar hinterlands. For a current policy or governance claim, use the port authority and ministry sources; a city tourism page may locate the coast but cannot define statutory port management.
Active recall: State Visakhapatnam's port class and two adjacent industrial associations without merging their administrations.
