13 | Singles, doubles and team badminton

Badminton event labels are compact but decisive. Men's singles and women's singles feature individual players; men's and women's doubles are pairs; mixed doubles pairs one man and one woman. A national team competition aggregates separate rubbers and has a team result. The BWF World Championships and Olympic Games each publish event-specific results, while the Sudirman Cup is a mixed-team competition. A gold in one is not a gold in another.

An exam may ask for the “first Indian pair” at a named tournament. The category must include both players and the precise tournament; otherwise several older and newer results can fit. Use abbreviations only after writing them out once: MS, WS, MD, WD and XD. A quick elimination method is to count the named athletes. A single named player plus “men's doubles” should make you inspect the stem, while two named partners plus “singles” is internally suspect.

Worked example: In a badminton results table, women's singles, men's doubles and mixed team are distinct competitions. A player can take part in more than one format, but a medal in a team event belongs to the team competition. Before counting medals, filter rows by event name. This prevents double counting a team podium as an additional individual final.

Active recall: Classify Sindhu, Srikanth and Rankireddy–Shetty using WS, MS and MD.
