34 | Olympic, world and continental medals

The Olympics, a sport's world championship, the Asian Games and a continental sport championship are separate stages. A gold at one event cannot be promoted to a gold at a different event. Sindhu's Rio and Tokyo results are Olympic medals, while her Basel gold was at the BWF World Championships. Jyothi's Asian championship success is a continental athletics result; it does not turn her Paris 2024 participation into an Olympic medal.

“World” can also occur in a junior competition or a rapid chess format. Specify senior or junior and the event format when the source does. A useful comparison grid has columns for organiser, discipline, edition/year and medal or title. If one column is blank, the claim is not ready for an MCQ answer key. This approach also prevents a venue from being confused with the title: Basel is a city, BWF World Championships is the competition.

Worked example: Olympic, world-championship and continental medals are not interchangeable. Sindhu's Olympic silver, BWF world gold and any Asian-level result each belong to a named competition. Rank medals only within a clearly defined event and edition. The generic phrase 'international medal' may be true but is too coarse for most SI and constable MCQs.

Active recall: Classify Sindhu's Basel gold and Jyothi's Asian title by competition level.
