08 | Tokyo 2020 bronze and edition naming

Sindhu won the women's singles bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021. The government release dated 1 August 2021 identifies her bronze and her earlier Rio silver. The phrase “Tokyo 2020” is the official edition title, not proof that competition happened during the calendar year 2020. This distinction appears across pandemic-delayed sports records; keep edition, actual date and medal separate on a card.

At the time of the Tokyo result, the Ministry described Sindhu as the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. This is a historically dated first, not a claim about all later Games or all double medallists. A question saying “first Indian woman with two Olympic medals at Tokyo” points to Sindhu; “first Indian woman Olympic medallist” points to Karnam Malleswari in Sydney 2000. The extra word “two” changes the answer entirely.

Worked example: Tokyo 2020 was held in 2021. The event keeps the official edition name Tokyo 2020, while the calendar year of competition was 2021. Sindhu won women's singles bronze there. If a stem asks for edition, answer Tokyo 2020; if it asks the year she received the medal, give 2021. The distinction is a common date trap.

Active recall: Give the official edition name, actual calendar year and medal colour for Sindhu's second Olympic medal.

Three Sindhu results

Rio silver, Basel world gold and Tokyo bronze belong to separate competitions.
