29 | Arjuna Awards

The Arjuna Award is a national sporting honour for sportspersons, administered through the Ministry's National Sports Awards system. FIDE's biography records an Arjuna Award association for Koneru Humpy, and its Harika profile describes the honour after her junior chess success. To check an exact award year, consult the Ministry's official list rather than assuming the year of a championship and the year of government recognition match.

Arjuna is neither a coach award nor a competition trophy. A person can have an Arjuna Award and also later receive a Padma honour or win a world event. Separate the lines in a fact table. In exam options, a mythological-sounding name may be paired with the wrong category; the simple correction is “Arjuna—sportsperson.” Because the award scheme and criteria can change, this book avoids undated claims about current monetary value or eligible years of performance.

Worked example: An Arjuna Award entry identifies a sportsperson and award year. It does not prove that the awardee won an Olympic gold that year. Cross-check the specific event in an official result archive. If a pair receives recognition, use the ministry's recipient list for whether the award is listed by individual names, and do not convert an award into a medal.

Active recall: If a chess player's FIDE biography mentions Arjuna, does that alone prove the year of a world title? Explain.
