17 | Koneru Humpy and the grandmaster title

Koneru Humpy is a chess grandmaster. FIDE's profile gives her GM title year as 2002 and documents her early tournament progress. The general GM title is not identical to the separate Woman Grandmaster title; FIDE lists both, with different title requirements and years. A chess title is a career qualification and does not itself identify a world championship winner. A “world rapid champion” card needs the competition and year too.

Humpy's AP association is strong in the region's sports narrative, but this book avoids a precise birth-town marker without an official source for it. FIDE's archived profiles can include old ratings and current-style rank panels that are already stale. For static exam recall, focus on GM, chess, and her verified 2019 and 2024 women's rapid titles. For a ranking or age-based record, state the record date and check whether it still stands before making it an answer key.

Worked example: Koneru Humpy is a chess grandmaster. A GM title is an individual status conferred under FIDE rules; it is not itself a World Rapid Championship result. The title and a tournament crown can coexist. If an MCQ asks 'who won the women's world rapid title in 2024', answer from the 2024 FIDE championship record, not from the general player biography alone.

Active recall: Explain the difference between “GM in 2002” and “women's world rapid champion in 2019.”
