AP Sports, Awards and Firsts · Chapter 2
01 | A precise method for sports facts

Begin every sports card with five fields: person or team, discipline, event, competition and year. “Badminton champion” is inadequate because women's singles at the BWF World Championships, Olympic women's singles and an Asian team event have different winners. “First” needs an even narrower field. Karnam Malleswari's Sydney bronze is India's first Olympic medal won by a woman, while P V Sindhu's Basel title is India's first badminton world-championship gold. Neither statement says every Indian sport or event had its first medal at that moment.

Place comes last, after the result is established. Birthplace, family association, training base, national representation and membership of a state association can point to different locations. A Telugu athlete born in Hyderabad cannot automatically be plotted as born in today's Andhra Pradesh. In a multiple-choice item, underline the category words before looking at the familiar name.

Worked example: An athlete is called 'first' in a social post. Write the full claim before memorising it: first person of which nationality, gender, discipline, medal level and competition? A result sheet proves an event outcome; an award list proves an honour; neither alone proves a broad historical first. If one qualifier is missing, compare the claim with earlier results before making an exam card.

Active recall: Convert “Sindhu was first” into a complete testable claim. Which five fields are missing?
