33 | Padma awards are civilian honours

Padma Shri and other Padma awards are civilian honours across fields, including sport. FIDE's profile describes Humpy's Padma Shri in addition to chess titles and sports honours; Harika's profile likewise notes her Padma Shri. These awards should not be silently placed inside the National Sports Awards category. The issuer and purpose differ even when a sportsperson receives both.

An exam list might contain “Arjuna, Dronacharya, Khel Ratna, Padma Shri” and ask which is a civilian honour. The answer is Padma Shri. Conversely, a question about a national sports coach award points to Dronacharya. A state award is yet another category. The public may call all of them “sports awards” informally because athletes receive them, but official classification matters. Avoid using an award to infer a competition gold: honouring a career does not rewrite results at a particular championship.

Worked example: A Padma award is a civilian honour, even if given to a sportsperson. It should be studied under the Ministry of Home Affairs award list, not counted as a National Sports Award category. If a multiple-choice stem says 'sports award of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports', a Padma option is a category mismatch.

Active recall: Which is the civilian honour in a list of Padma Shri, Arjuna and Dronacharya?
