25 | Cricket association, state and birthplace

Indian cricket uses national teams, domestic state associations and franchise teams. Those memberships do not necessarily prove where a player was born. The Andhra Cricket Association and Hyderabad Cricket Association are distinct bodies, and a national-team appearance is a third category. An exam statement such as “represented Andhra Pradesh” can refer to a particular season, whereas “born in Andhra Pradesh” is a civil geography claim that may change meaning when older text is read after bifurcation.

For athlete cards, write place evidence in its own column and keep the date. A pre-2014 reference to undivided Andhra Pradesh may include places now in Telangana. Similarly, a player based in a training academy may come from a different district. A map marker should be labelled “birth,” “club,” “training” or “event venue” rather than using an anonymous dot. This method lets a reader use sports to practise historical geography without inventing a birthplace.

Worked example: A cricketer may be born in one state, represent another domestic team and play for India. These fields can all be true. A question asking 'state association' needs the relevant season and team, not simply the birthplace. This is especially important for careers spanning the 2014 AP-Telangana split. Build separate place and team columns.

Active recall: Why do an international cap, a domestic association and a birthplace require three separate lines?
