Public health & India’s programmes

From prevention to eradication, the vaccines, disease terms and national health programmes exams ask about.

Step by step

  1. Prevent. Clean water, sanitation, vector control and vaccination reduce the chance of infection.
  2. Detect and report. Surveillance systems spot outbreaks early so response can start quickly.
  3. Treat and contain. Treatment protocols such as DOTS for TB cure cases and cut onward spread.
  4. Control, eliminate, eradicate. Control lowers disease burden; elimination removes it in a region; eradication removes it worldwide.
  5. Certify and sustain. Certification confirms success; immunisation and surveillance continue to prevent return.

Concepts

Common exam trap

Eradication is not elimination, and a vector (like Anopheles) is not the causative pathogen (Plasmodium). Remember: only smallpox has been eradicated among human diseases.
