Skin & body temperature
Layers of the skin, then the feedback loop that holds the body near 37 °C.
Step by step
- Sensors detect temperature. Skin thermoreceptors and the hypothalamus monitor the body’s temperature against a set point near 37 °C.
- Hypothalamus compares. The hypothalamus acts as the thermostat and decides whether to cool or conserve heat.
- If too hot. Skin vessels dilate and sweat glands secrete; evaporation of sweat removes heat.
- If too cold. Skin vessels constrict, shivering produces heat, and metabolism may rise.
- Feedback restores balance. As temperature returns toward the set point, the response is switched off — negative feedback.
Key facts
- Skin is the largest organ of the body (about 1.5–2 m² in adults). Layers: epidermis (outer, keratinised), dermis (blood vessels, nerves, glands) and hypodermis (fat).
- Melanin, made by melanocytes in the epidermis, gives colour and protects against UV. Albinism is lack of melanin.
- Skin makes vitamin D when exposed to UV-B sunlight. Hair and nails are made of keratin.
- Normal body temperature is about 37 °C (98.6 °F). The hypothalamus is the body’s thermostat.
- Sweat glands cool the body by evaporation; sebaceous glands secrete oily sebum. Blocked sebaceous glands can cause acne.
- Skin senses touch, pressure, pain and temperature. Melanoma is a dangerous skin cancer of melanocytes.
Concepts
- Heat loss by evaporation works best in dry air; in high humidity sweat evaporates poorly, so heat stress is more likely.
- Fever is a controlled rise in set point caused by pyrogens, not a failure of regulation; the body then shivers to reach the higher set point.
- Infants rely partly on brown fat for non-shivering heat production. —
- Homeostasis uses negative feedback: a change triggers a response that opposes the change. —
Common exam trap
Goosebumps are a leftover reflex and do not warm humans much; shivering is the main muscular heat source. Skin colour comes from melanin, not carotene.
